Celebrating 3-Years as a KC Family Photographer

It all started with a Dream and a Deployment.

This time 3-years-ago, April of 2021, my husband was deployed in Poland and I was raising my three children back home at Fort Riley who were 4YO, 2YO, and 10MO.

I had dreamt of having my own photography business for years but kept waiting for just “the right time”. I remember mentioning to my husband back in 2018 that someday I wanted to have a photography business as a side job or “serious hobby”. I told him it would be a fun retirement job. Something to pass the time and simply bring me joy. I never even considered that it could be a full time and profitable career option!

My husband had recently informed me that his current deployment was being extended. He had already been gone for 6 months and was supposed to be coming home in just 3 more months. Now he had to stay for at least another 2 months, potentially more. There was no set return timeframe.

It was then that I realized the timing was NEVER going to be just right to begin my business. This life we were living had too many inconsistent variables to try and plan around. Too many unknowns. Too many what-ifs, but thens, and what nows.

I remember bringing this news to prayer and feeling so disheartened and defeated. I was so frustrated that the Lord would allow my husband to be away from us for so long. I didn’t understand why he had put such a strong desire on my heart to document the beauty of families and friends and not give me the opportunity to even begin. Why would he not give me the perfect timing?

Until I quite literally heard the words in my soul…“The time is N O W.”

There was no questioning, procrastinating, or denying something as clear as that. 😂

It was then that I realized that this desire God had placed on my heart wasn’t going to go away. It was there for a reason. But just because the Lord places a desire on your heart doesn’t mean He’s always going to make it super easy to achieve and then succeed. Think about how boring our lives would be if He just handed us everything we desired on a silver platter! We would get so bored SO quickly!

The desire was there to motivate me to begin even though the timing was NOT perfect, ideal, or even easy. If I could begin a business from scratch on my own in the midst of the hardest phase of my life to date, then I could do just about anything right?

In the past 3 years of running my business I have learned a whole lot about myself.

I’ve met some crazy talented humans who have inspired me and helped educate me along the way.

And I’ve had the honor to work with and serve some absolutely amazing clients!

Thanks be to God for his goodness and persistence of showing me His will for my life and how I can serve him best.

Thank you to every single person who has encouraged and supported me and my business along the way! It’s because of each one of you that I have the opportunity to do what brings my heart a crazy amount of joy while helping financially support and provide for my own family!

If you’ve been waiting to bring a dream you’ve had for a long time to life, remember that the timing may not ever be perfect! The timing doesn’t have to be perfect to get started.
